note to self: i’ll be there for you, always

written june 6, 2021. Photo by Kristine Cinate on Unsplash I have always looked for myself in other people. I think the idea was that they would somehow hold the pieces of me that I felt were missing. That maybe, if I wrapped my identity up in theirs enough, we would somehow make a whole person. It's not healthy to live like this, but I did it anyway — burning through relationships and searching for something I couldn't quite name. It was never enough, not to be myself, but it was never enough to latch my identity to other people, either. I got close, several times — I thought I had reached the pinnacle of self discovery. I thought I had completed myself. But in the end, relying on other people to help build yourself is never a viable way to do things. It's only recently that I've started to become comfortable with the idea of being enough, as I am, on my own. Several years ago, in this same position, I would have searched for another person to attach my identity onto,...

Beautiful People: Valentine Edition

This is our second Beautiful People after our break to do Beautiful Books, and it's wonderful to be back!

Beautiful People is a monthly blog meme hosted by Cait @ Paper Fury and myself. Every month we post 10 questions for you to answer about your characters.

Last month we focused on authors, though. So this month is the first month we return to our semi-normal programming.

We're doing characters, but we're actually doing fictional couples. It's Valentine's Day--why not?! So pick your favorite pairing from your novel and saddle up!

A quick note: Some of these questions may not be applicable to your characters. That's okay! We can't make questions to fit everybody to a tee, though we may try. If a question doesn't fit, skip it. We won't mind.

Please link back to us using our blog names or one of these fancy blog buttons:

And now the questions.
  1. How long have they been a couple?
  2. How did they first meet?
  3. What were their first thoughts of each other? (Love at first sight or “you’re freakishly annoying”?)
  4. What do they do that most annoys each other?
  5. Are their personalities opposite or similar?
  6. How would their lives be different without each other?
  7. Are they ever embarrassed of each other?
  8. Does anyone disapprove of their relationship?
  9. Do they see their relationship as long-term/leading to marriage?
  10. If they could plan the “perfect outing” together, where would they go?
Take those questions, copy and paste 'em, and head on over to post them on your blog! And don't forget to check out the links of the other participants. It's a great way to make new friends!

It's the month of loooove. Tell us all about yours. Well, your fictional characters' love, that is.

What developments have occurred in the love life of your characters recently?
Also, what do you think of the new blog design?

  1. Oh, I forgot to comment on this blog! I left my link. I forgot to do the last Beautiful People! I could do it anyway now but... -sigh- so much to do and so little time. =o Anyway, I liked the questions this time round.

I love your new blog design! A lottt of bloggers I'm following are switching to this central-aligned, white-themed blog. It should be 'samey', but actually everybody does it in their own way and I really like it. I stick with purple though, because... purple <3 Will you be doing the meme too, Sky? I remember I was reading about your story in the last BP. (I'm sorry, I've forgotten what it was about! I'll recap before I read.)

IT MAKES ME VERY HAPPY THAT YOU USED A FRINGE SHIP. I MEAN, GIF. o_o

    1. No worries! Ah, yes, I feel you. Thank you! I'm glad you liked them.

Thank you so much! Yes, I've noticed the same thing. Oh my goodness, I love purple. Good choice. <3

I will be doing it! Thanks for asking! I haven't decided which couple of mine I'll do, but I think I will feature my couple from Lost Girls, my Beautiful Books novel! (Don't worry about forgetting about it! I would have forgotten as well! You are so sweet.)

OH I DIDN'T EVEN REALIZE IT WAS FROM FRINGE! I need to watch it!

      Thanks for the comment!

    2. OMG yes that was it!! Lost Girls! Sooo maaany giiirls XD I remember now. Jem. That was it.
I'm a huge Cortexi-fan. If you like mind-blowing science and FBI/crime scene investigations and complicated romances and awesome special effects and alternate universes(?!), that is the show for you.

    3. Lost Girls, yes! There WERE so many girls. XD I'm really happy with Jem, though. She's one of my favorite main characters that I've written.

Nice! Yes, that sounds right up my alley. I'm going to check it out. B)

  2. Just found out about your meme - and your site - from Grace and Steele. I'm a writer myself, and I'd love to join in (and meet more writers). Is there a deadline for completing the meme, or could do I it in the next week or so?

  3. Thanks for hosting this meme! I discovered it thanks to Grace & Steele's blog, and it's so welcome and refreshing to see a writing meme for once.

I have to admit, I've been shy and only lurked around most people's answers so far, but I hope to be a little more "outgoing" next time around. :)
